Breaking the Mold

Well I'm going to break outside of the mold and post on a Thursday. As you can see all blog posts this month so far have been on Wednesdays but I dare to be different. I have also seen an interest in creating "dating" like sites with XMod in the forum of late. I had indicated in one of my earlier posts that I would do some tutorial type posts, so what the heck, I've found my fodder!

First off lets list our specs and determine what we want to get out of this project. I'm gonna codename it the Date Monster because to tackle a tutorial this big may very well turn into a monster! I also want to add in some Facebook type features, cause who doesn't want to ride the Web 2.0 wave? Might as well go for the gold right?

Here is what I want to get out of the Date Monster accomplishing everything via XMod. I understand that areas of this may be easier to accomplish with other modules, but lets see what this thing we've grown to know and love called XMod can do!

List of features:

-Ability for users to sign up and create a profile
-Ability for users to private message each other
-Ability for users to rate other users (oh boy, this may get tricky!)
-Ability to find other users in your area
-Ability to add users as your "buddy" or "friend"
-Ability for "wall" of posts much like Facebook (are we over our head yet?)
-Ability for users to form groups of friends

Wow, Do you think we can pull it off? Let's hope so!

Did I miss anything? Before I start I want to have a pretty solid road ahead of features to accomplish so I don't have to backtrack through the forms and templates.

What do you want to see added before we begin? I don't have much experience with how dating sites work so I don't want to miss the obvious...

Re: Breaking the Mold

Most all dating sites have one problem in common and that is the problem of people not really wanting the whole world to see their picture (or any other personal identifying info). Many people don't do the online dating because of this. Yet most people want to see what the other person looks like before getting to heavily involved. So maybe a system where a person could lock their profile and give out an access code or be able to unlock their main profile for users they determine to be ok???? So you would have a pre-profile that tells a bit about the person and full profile that is lockable.

Just a thought.

Good idea! I think we can integrate that...

Re: Breaking the Mold

I believe most dating sites have the ability for a user to block certain other users so that they can not access the page or make contact. Also some reporting system for un-apropriate content? Well it can get pretty complex when digging into it... The rating will be part of Xmod 5 or?

Re: Breaking the Mold

Now that XMod 5 has been released, some of these goals just got a lot easier to reach. Kelly's timing was perfect as I was hoping to start the project with version 5!

SolvedAhlgren: these are also great additions to the project and I'll try to incorporate them the best I can.
